    Which is better, CELTA or TEFL?

    The awarding body, professional standards & recognition

    CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) as a globally recognised teaching qualification is awarded by Cambridge English Language Assessment. It has been around since 1962 and Cambridge gave it its seal of approval in 1988.

    The course is based on the Cambridge CELTA Syllabus and can only be conducted by authorised Cambridge CELTA centres.
    In other words:

    • the centres which want to run CELTA courses need to be first approved by Cambridge and the permission is granted only if the centre meets the strict requirements
    • the centre’s CELTA tutors need to be trained and accredited by Cambridge experts
    • the tutors need to participate in global standardisation on a regular basis
    • every single course is supervised externally by a Cambridge Assessor to ensure the same high standards are observed globally.

    These are all the conditions that our centre, Lang LTC, has succeeded in meeting since 2014.

    What level of qualification is CELTA?

    For the UK, CELTA is considered a Level 5 qualification, which makes getting an ELT job there easier, considering the recognition CELTA has globally. This is below the MA degree.

    TEFL courses can be designed and conducted by any teacher training institution. Each institution can design its own programme, decide who runs the course and what to include. There is no external awarding body. There is no unified syllabus. There is no standardisation or supervision. 

    Some TEFL courses meet the Level 5 qualification requirement but it does not mean that they are recognised globally. Oftentimes, they are run by educational institutions which provide paid yet basic training for novice teachers they later hire or offer teaching jobs to.

    The price and syllabus

    You may wonder how much the CELTA course costs. It will depend on the centre and its geographical location. The expenses on the part of the centre are quite high, especially if the centre decides to run cosier groups with more time for each participant. So the price often depends on the size of the centre and how big the groups are: there is one tutor needed for every Teach Practice group of 6 teacher participants.

    That said, when you pay for the CELTA course, the fee usually includes the Cambridge fees, the full programme of well-structured and supervised tuition by accredited tutors, and access to all the online apps used during the course – especially important during online CELTA courses like ours – all the resources and the shipping cost of your certificate.

    Check the special Early Bird offer at our centre, Lang LTC HERE. A great bargain! You pay EUR 1052 if you apply early enough. Then, you need to pay the standard fee of EUR 1172, which is still quite competitive. 

    How many hours does the CELTA course take?

    CELTA courses include 120 hours of scheduled sessions, with 8 assessed lessons taught to real students at two different levels.
    The course schedule is meticulously planned and approved by Cambridge. The sessions need to include interactive input (in the form of workshops), guided lesson observations including demo lessons run by the course tutors, guided peer observations, guided lesson planning, the above-mentioned Teaching Practice with group and individual feedback, individual tutorials, and four written assignments. Everything revolves around the practice of teaching and allows each teacher to develop from lesson to lesson, working with at least two different tutors. The additional self-study is estimated at a minimum of 80 hours.

    In a nutshell, if you complete the CELTA programme, you have experienced enough planning, teaching and training to understand how to teach as a freelancer or in a language school.

    TEFL courses are shorter, radically cheaper and do not include a robust Teaching Practice component with feedback on teaching provided by fully-qualified and externally-verified tutors. 

    That said, employers will expect a teaching qualification which includes the so-called practicum – they want a teacher who has already experienced teaching, feedback on this teaching and customised training.
    CELTA meets these demands.
    Is CELTA worth it? Yes.

    So, which is better for me, TEFL or CELTA?

    What is CELTA? – part 2

    Read on to get answers to these questions:

    Is CELTA an exam?

    No. CELTA stands for the Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. It is a certificate awarded by Cambridge English Language Assessment to the candidates who complete the CELTA course and meet the required assessment standards. It does sound serious and a bit opaque. Let’s try and explain it in simple terms.

    To get the Cambridge CELTA certificate, you need to meet the expected standard in these areas:

    • Attendance: Complete the course by attending 100% of the scheduled sessions
    • Teaching Practice: Teach 8 observed and assessed lessons (6 clock hours, in total) and meet the Pass standard for the entire Teaching Practice (TP, for short)
    • Written Assignments: Submit 4 written assignments and pass at least 3 of them
    • Professional Conduct: Meet the professional standards required from a teacher
    • Anti-Plagiarism: Submit the work which is all your own. You can be inspired by other sources but they cannot be copied verbatim and the sources need to be clearly cited

    In other words, the two or more tutors you work with during the course will assess your progress based on your coursework, step by step. This is done through ongoing assessment so every bit of your coursework matters. 

    Your lesson plans and resources as well as your written assignments are part of your CELTA Portfolio, which is reviewed by the Cambridge CELTA Assessor to ensure the CELTA grading standards are the same globally. CELTA Tutors grade your work and the CELTA Assessors ensure they are fair and in line with the Cambridge CELTA standards.

    There is no test or exam to take.

    There are four possible grades on the certificate:

    • Fail – when the candidate does not meet the standard
    • Pass, Pass B or Pass A – when the candidate meets the standard. Pass B could be roughly compared to a merit and Pass A – to a distinction

    Since the very first course, at Lang LTC –  the only Cambridge English Platinum Centre in Poland, we have not had a Fail certificate and our graduates have completed the course with a fair share of all Pass grades.

    We are happy to award Pass B and Pass A certificates and – from experience – we can assure you that the grade depends not so much on the candidate’s previous experience but on their work during the course. Experienced teachers will have a lot to unlearn and relearn. New teachers and complete newbies will have a lot to learn. Everything depends on the effort and… enjoyment of teaching during the course. The best teachers are happy teachers!

    Can CELTA be done online?

    You can take the CELTA course, choosing one of these course formats:

    • Fully online CELTA – your Teaching Practice and all the input sessions are organised online. These courses help you save commuting time, accommodation and boarding costs as you can take them from any location at a centre in any location.     • Face-to-face CELTA – your Teaching Practice and all the input sessions are conducted in physical classrooms. Use the Cambridge browser HERE to find face-to-face courses in your selected location. Then, apply through the centre’s website,
    • Mixed-mode/Combined CELTA – your Teaching Practice and the input sessions are done partly online and partly in physical classrooms. Use the Cambridge browser HERE to find mixed-mode/combined courses in your selected location. Then, apply through the centre’s website,

    You may wonder: Is online CELTA better or worse? 

    We strongly recommend online CELTA programmes to candidates who:

    • want to save on travel, boarding and accommodation
    • started teaching online with no preparation and are tired of winging it
    • prefer to follow a part-time programme, with fewer sessions per week spread over a longer period of time, as they need to combine CELTA with other commitments. You may want to check the Saturday-only online CELTA at Lang LTC HERE
    • want to be more flexible and ready to teach online on demand (as well as face-to-face if needed and desired) e.g. digital nomads, homeschooling parents, frequent travellers, teachers working for private schools running both face-to-face and online courses, people who want to teach online as a side hustle for extra income
    • have ample experience teaching face-to-face but lose the magic when teaching online… and they cannot work out why
    • have mobility problems and prefer to work from home

    At Lang LTC, we believe the online CELTA programmes may not be suitable for people who:

    • know they will definitely need to work face-to-face in the future and also
    • have never faced a group or are seriously intimidated by the very thought of standing or sitting in front of a group of learners

    If this rings a bell, you will need more practice in the physical classroom to find your feet and find your voice. 

    You can start with an online CELTA course and pass it with flying colours but – afterwards –  be prepared for a transition period of pro bono face-to-face teaching first, before you can fully enjoy a proper face-to-face teaching job. 

    As always, there are exceptions to the rule, but teaching face-to-face will always require a dose of confidence which comes with practice. Personality-wise, if you are on the shy, highly introverted and/or insecure side, then a fully online CELTA programme won’t let you develop your real-life confidence to the extent a face-to-face programme would. The question is: Would you ever want to teach face-to-face if facing a group generates so much anxiety?

    The paper-based IELTS exam is no longer available in Poland.

    As of the beginning of 2026, the IELTS Paper-Based (PB) test has been fully withdrawn from all test centres in Poland.

    Currently, IELTS can be taken only in the Computer-Delivered IELTS format.

    Important: the computer-delivered exam still takes place in person at an official test centre, not from home. The test format, level of difficulty, and certificate validity remain unchanged.

      The exam fee must be paid within 48 hours of registration, but no later than 3 days before the test date.

      Things to remember before the test

      Read The IELTS test Regulations

      Check you have a valid photo ID or Passport.
      Check you have a colour scan or photo of your ID or passport. The file size should not be larger than 1.5 MB and MUST be the same document you bring on your exam day.
      Please note that the photo ID you upload, MUST match the photo ID you take on your test day.

      After the registration, you’ll receive an e-mail.

      The test session plan (address, timetable) you’ll receive in your e-mail 3 days before the test day.

      The registration deadline may be extended if there are places left after the official close of registration date.
      Please bear in mind that the session will not be visible in the system after the deadline for registration.

      IELTS scoring in detail

      The IELTS Academic and General Training test results are reported using the same nine-band scale.

      You can score whole band scores (for example 5.0, 6.0, 7.0) or half band scores (e.g. 5.5, 6.5, 7.5).

      TRF shows a score for each of the four test parts (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking), as well as an overall band score, which is the average of the four component scores, rounded to the nearest whole or half band.

      The component scores are weighted equally. If the average of the four components ends in .25, the Overall Band Score is rounded up to the next half band, and if it ends in .75, the Overall Band Score is rounded up to the next whole band.

      Component Band Scores

      Listening – There are 40 questions in the IELTS Listening test. Each correct answer has a weight of one point. Scores out of 40 are converted to the IELTS nine-band scale.

      Reading – There are 40 questions in the IELTS Reading test. Each correct answer has a weight of one point. Scores out of 40 are converted to the IELTS nine-band scale.

      Writing Assessment 

      To determine your Writing band score, examiners look at four core criteria (weighted equally) and take the average. For Task 1, they assess Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. For Task 2, they assess Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy.

      Speaking Assessment 

      To determine your Speaking band score, examiners look at four core criteria (weighted equally) and take the average. These criteria are Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation.

      Official public versions of these assessment criteria have been developed to help test-takers and stakeholders understand the exact level of performance required for each band score.

      Skala Cambridge English

      Egzaminy Cambridge oceniają znajomość angielskiego na różnych poziomach, zgodnych z CEFR. Są to poziomy od podstawowego A1 do zaawansowanego C2:

      • A1 (Movers i Starters) – poziom dla początkujących (100–119 punktów). Dotyczy osób rozpoczynających naukę języka angielskiego.
      • A2 (Key) – poziom podstawowy (120–139 punktów), dla osób uczących się podstawowej komunikacji. Na tym poziomie wynik IELTS wynosi poniżej 4.0.
      • B1 (Preliminary) – poziom średni (140–159 punktów), dla osób mogących porozumiewać się w prostych sytuacjach. Odpowiada to wynikowi IELTS 4.0 – 5.5.
      • B2 (First) – średniozaawansowany (160–179 punktów), typowy dla osób dobrze radzących sobie w codziennej komunikacji w języku angielskim. Stopnie to A, B, C, a wynik IELTS to 5.5 – 6.5.
      • C1 (Advanced) – poziom zaawansowany (180–199 punktów). Zaliczenie z oceną A, B lub C potwierdza wysoki poziom umiejętności językowych. Na tym poziomie wynik IELTS to 6.5 – 8.0.
      • C2 (Proficiency) – jest to najwyższy poziom znajomości języka, odpowiadający pełnej biegłości. Wyniki od 200 do 230 punktów w skali Cambridge. Można uzyskać stopnie: A, B lub C. Odpowiada to poziomowi 8.0 – 9.0 w systemie IELTS.

      For Cambridge English exams that we offer, you need to register online.

      TERMINY SESJI EGZAMINÓW CAMBRIDGE

      When registering for the Cambridge English exam you need to:

      • choose the appropriate version of the exam: paper-based or computer-based – keep in mind that depending on the version of the exam you choose, you will wait a correspondingly long time for the results online , and thus for the certificate
      • select a suitable exam date
      • choose a package (BASIC, SAFE or COMFY) and the form of payment for the exam (traditional bank transfer or electronic payment)
      • choose the way of collecting the certificate (personal collection, shipment: Poczta Polska or courier company)
      • accept the Regulations of the Lang LTC Examination Center.
      • if the candidate requests special facilities during the exam (e.g., due to dyslexia or hearing impairment), mark the appropriate option on the form and attach documentation confirming the disability.
      • indicate whether we are to issue an invoice (the invoice data should be provided in the exam registration form).

      All activities of the Lang LTC Examination Center are carried out in compliance with sanitary requirements and strictures related to the current epidemic situation. See the terms and conditions for more details.

      After properly completing the form, the candidate will receive an email confirmation of registration for the chosen Cambridge English exam and the transfer details if the online payment option has not been selected.

      Attention!
      The closing date for registration for the Cambridge English exam is also the deadline for payment for the exam.

      If the minimum number of candidates required by Cambridge to hold a session does not gather for a given exam date, the center will offer enrolled candidates to take the exam on another convenient date.

      Confirmation of Entry document is sent by the Examination Center to all candidates at least 7 days before the scheduled exam session. It contains detailed information about the session: the location of the exam and the exact times of each component, as well as information on where, when and how to check the results online.

      TERMINY SESJI EGZAMINÓW CAMBRIDGE

      Rejestrując się na egzamin Cambridge English trzeba:

      • wybrać odpowiednią wersję egzaminu: papierową lub komputerową – pamiętaj, że w zależności od wybranej wersji egzaminu będziesz odpowiednio długo czekał na wyniki on-line, a tym samym i na certyfikat
      • wybrać odpowiedni termin egzaminu
      • wybrać pakiet (BASIC, SAFE lub COMFY) i formę płatności za egzamin (przelew tradycyjny lub płatność elektroniczna)
      • wybrać sposób odbioru certyfikatu (odbiór osobisty, przesyłka: Poczta Polska lub firma kurierska)
      • zaakceptować Regulamin Centrum Egzaminacyjnego Lang LTC
      • jeśli kandydat wnioskuje o szczególne udogodnienia podczas egzaminu (np. z powodu dysleksji lub niedosłuchu) należy zaznaczyć odpowiednią opcję w formularzu i dołączyć skan dokumentacji potwierdzającej dysfunkcję
      • zaznaczyć, czy mamy wystawić fakturę (dane do faktury należy podać w formularzu rejestracji na egzamin).

      Wszystkie działania Centrum Egzaminacyjnego Lang LTC realizowane są z zachowaniem wymogów i obostrzeń sanitarnych związanych z aktualną sytuacją epidemiczną. Więcej szczegółów na ten temat znajdziesz w regulaminie.

      Po prawidłowym wypełnieniu formularza kandydat otrzymuje mailowo potwierdzenie rejestracji na wybrany egzamin Cambridge English oraz dane do przelewu, jeśli nie została wybrana opcja płatności online.

      Uwaga!
      Termin zamknięcia rejestracji na egzamin Cambridge English jest również ostatecznym terminem zapłaty za egzamin.

      Jeżeli na dany termin egzaminu nie zbierze się minimalna liczba kandydatów wymagana przez Cambridge do przeprowadzenia sesji, centrum zaproponuje zapisanym kandydatom przystąpienie do egzaminu w innym dogodnym terminie.

      Potwierdzeniem rejestracji na egzamin jest imienny dokument Confirmation of Entry wysyłany przez Centrum Egzaminacyjne do wszystkich kandydatów najpóźniej 7 dni przed planowaną sesją egzaminacyjną. Zawiera on szczegółowe informacje dotyczące sesji: miejsce egzaminu oraz dokładne godziny poszczególnych komponentów, jak również informacje gdzie, kiedy i jak sprawdzić wyniki on-line.

      Jeśli masz zamiar przystąpić do egzaminu IELTS i szukasz informacji na temat tego testu, być może odkryłeś, że możesz przystąpić do niego u jednego z dwóch dostawców w Polsce: IDP lub British Council. Jeśli zastanawiasz się, którego wybrać, czytaj dalej, ponieważ ten artykuł jest dla Ciebie.

      Zawartość testu: IELTS w IDP czy British Council?

      Warto zauważyć, że IELTS należy do trzech współwłaścicieli: British Council, IDP i Cambridge English. Rolą IDP i British Council w ramach tego partnerstwa jest przeprowadzanie egzaminu na świecie, co wiąże się z zarządzaniem ośrodkami egzaminacyjnymi, planowaniem terminów testów, przetwarzaniem rejestracji oraz zapewnianiem przestrzegania wszystkich standardów jakości i bezpieczeństwa.       Ocena testu IELTS: Procedury w British Council a IDP

      Procedury, kryteria i system oceniania IELTS są również identyczne u obu dostawców.

      Części Czytanie i Słuchanie są oceniane w oparciu o klucz, natomiast Pisanie jest oceniane centralnie przez zespół wyspecjalizowanych egzaminatorów, którzy posługują się tymi samymi, ściśle określonymi kryteriami oceny wypowiedzi pisemnych. Komponent Mówienie jest przeprowadzany i oceniany w centrach egzaminacyjnych przez specjalnie wyszkolonych i zatwierdzonych egzaminatorów IELTS.

      Wszyscy egzaminatorzy są szkoleni w ten sam sposób, a stosowane kryteria i procedury oceny oparte są na wspólnych wytycznych.

      Wyniki testu IELTS – Centrum, a różnice w terminach

      Zarówno IDP, jak i British Council są zobowiązani do przestrzegania tych samych terminów przy publikowaniu wyników i wydawania certyfikatów (TRF). Jeśli zdajesz egzamin IELTS na komputerze, Twój TRF jest dostępny 3-5 dni po teście, natomiast gdy podchodzisz do egzaminu IELTS w wersji papierowej wyniki otrzymasz 13 dnia po teście.

      W którym centrum językowym zdać IELTS?

      Jeśli doczytałeś do tego momentu, możesz pomyśleć, że nie ma znaczenia, którego dostawcę wybierzesz. Biorąc pod uwagę sam test IELTS, masz rację, ale istnieje szereg innych czynników, które warto rozważyć zanim zarejestrujesz się u jednego z tych dwóch dostawców.
