IELTS tests four language skills and consists of four parts – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

You can find free sample IELTS practice tasks HERE.

There are no breaks between Listening, Reading and Writing parts of the test. Those parts last 2 hours and 45 minutes in total. Speaking part lasts 10 – 14 minutes.

Speaking – IELTS Academic and General (11-14 minutes)

The Speaking part for both the Academic and General versions is the same. It takes the form of a conversation with the examiner and consists of 3 parts:

    • Part 1 – the examiner asks general questions about your place of residence, family, work, education and hobbies
    • Part 2 – you have one minute to prepare an answer on a specified topic. Your answer should take two minutes. Then, the examiner will ask you one or two questions related to the topic discussed.
    • Part 3 – you will be asked an additional question related to the issue discussed in the previous part, giving you the opportunity to discuss the matter in more detail.

    Important: Speaking test is recorded

Listening – IELTS Academic and General (30 minutes +10 minutes to transfer responses to the answer sheet)

Listening for both the Academic and General versions is the same and consists of 4 recordings. The recording will only be played one time.

    • Part 1 – a conversation between two people set in an everyday social context
    • Part 2 – a monologue set in an everyday social context, e.g. a speech about local facilities
    • Part 3 – a conversation between up to four people set in an educational or training context,
e.g. a university tutor and a student discussing an assignment
    • Part 4 – a monologue on an academic subject, e.g. a university lecture

    Reading- IELTS Academic (60 minutes)

You have to read 3 long texts taken from from various sources such as books, academic journals, magazines and newspapers. They have been selected for a non-specialist audience but are appropriate for people entering university courses or seeking professional registration. The Reading section consists of 40 questions.

Reading – IELTS General (60 minutes)

You have to read 5-6 short excerpts from a variety of sources such as books, journals, newspapers, announcements, advertisements and instructions. These are texts you are likely to encounter on a daily basis in an English-speaking environment. The Reading section consists of 40 questions.

Writing – IELTS Academic (60 minutes)

You are presented with a graph, table, chart or diagram and asked to describe, summarise or explain the information in your own words (150 words) and you are asked to write an essay (250 words). Responses to both tasks must be in a formal style.

Writing – IELTS General (60 minutes)

  • Cambridge English Qualifications Digital – new exam experience

Cambridge English Qualifications Digital – new exam experience

In March 2024, Cambridge Assessment English will be globally introducing a new, improved system for taking Computer-based exams – Cambridge English Qualifications Digital

In response to the expectations of candidates taking English language exams, Cambridge English Assessment is introducing a new format for exams taken on computers (CB – Computer-based). Cambridge English Qualifications Digital, set to be implemented in March 2024, will enhance the exam experience for candidates opting to obtain a Cambridge English certificate.

What will the Cambridge English Qualifications Digital exams look like?

Similar to the CB (Computer-based) exams, the Digital exams will be taken on-site at the Examination Center on computers provided by the Center. Currently, there is no option to take Cambridge English exams remotely.

What improvements do the Digital exams offer?

The biggest improvement of the Digital exams will be the fast delivery of online results – they will be available just 5-10 working days after the exam date.

    Additionally, the Digital exams offer:

    • headphones with volume control for the Listening test; durnig paper-based (PB) exams, the recording is played through a speaker
    • the Writing test has an automatic word count
    • in the Reading test, you can make notes, highlight text and review your answers

How to register for Digital exam?

In order to register for Cambridge English exams you need to register online by filling in an online registration form: https://register.lang.com.pl/pl/search/

What are the differences between PB (Paper-Based) and Digital exams?

    PB ExamDigital Exam

Reading and Writing testPaper with pen and pencilComputer with keyboard, screen and mouse

Tested language skillsListening, Reading, Writing, SpeakingListening, Reading, Writing, Speaking
Listening testDigital audio playerHeadphones with volume control
    Speaking testOn-site, face-to-faceOn-site, face-to-face

In summary, both formats of Cambridge English exams test exactly the same language skills and are constructed from the same types of tasks. Additionally, both formats take place on-site at the Examination Center.
They differ in the medium of the exam (paper and pen/pencil or computer and keyboard) and in the waiting time for online results – 4-6 weeks for the paper version and 5-10 days for the Digital version.

Which version of the Cambridge English exam should I choose?

Choosing between the paper-based and computer-based versions of the Cambridge English exam is a personal matter.

Candidates accustomed to traditional exam-taking methods, who write by hand on a daily basis, may feel more confident taking the exam in the PB (Paper-Based) version; individuals who type frequently on a keyboard may prefer the Digital version.
Additionally, when choosing the exam format, one must consider the waiting time for results, which is longer for paper-based exams.

    FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

    ABOUT IELTS

    What is the IELTS test?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s most popular English language proficiency test for higher education and global migration.

Why are there two versions of the test?

There are two types of the IELTS test:
The IELTS Academic test is for people applying for higher education or professional registration in an English-speaking environment. It reflects some of the features of academic language and assesses whether you are ready to begin studying or training.
The IELTS General Training test is for those who are going to English speaking countries for secondary education, work experience or training programs. It is also a requirement for migration to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK. The test focuses on basic survival skills in broad social and workplace contexts. Listening and Speaking are the same for both tests, but the subject matter of the Reading and Writing sections differs depending on which test you take.

    Which organisations accept IELTS?

IELTS is accepted by more than 10,000 organizations worldwide. These include universities, immigration departments, government agencies, professional bodies and multinational companies.

  • Computer-delivered IELTS

    Computer-delivered IELTS

Test takers at our Test Centre can choose to take their test:

    • in traditional way, on paper – Paper Based (PB),
    • Computer Delivered (CD) – computerized, you write the test on a computer

In both variants, the Speaking part takes place in traditional form, i.e. with a certified IELTS examiner for the computer-delivered IELTS..

Computerdelivered testing is available for both IELTS Academic and General Training.

    Computer-delivered IELTS video tutorial:

There are many advantages of this format outlined below:

The same price – both IELTS PB and CD fee is 995 PLN.

Increased number of test availability up to 4 times a week – there are more dates and times you can take IELTS at our centre. More test availability will provide more flexibility for test takers and could help with planning and for meeting deadlines for a variety of things, including submitting applications for work, school, immigration, and more.

Faster results – another advantage of the taking IELTS on computer is that test results will be available quicker compared to the paper-based test. The results will be available within 3-5 days after taking the test. Currently it takes 13 days to get results for the paper-based test.

No more messy writing – one concern we have heard from some who take the IELTS test is worrying about messy and hard-to- read handwriting. That may be a relief for many people!

Good quality listening – you will be using headphones in the Listening part. The headphones eliminate external noise and enable you to adjust the volume. Nothing will disturb you in this part of the test!

Choices – even though the computer-based test is being rolled out, you can still choose to take the paper-based test or a computer-delivered one

IMPORTANT! The computer-delivered test will be the same as the paper-based test. The only difference is that you use a computer for your test rather than using paper and a pencil!

Keep in mind that the Speaking test will continue to be done face-to-face with a certified IELTS examiner for the computer-delivered IELTS.
