Changes to the IELTS Exam in Poland in 2026 – A Complete Guide for Candidates

Starting in January 2026, the IELTS test in Poland is undergoing a complete digital transformation. The paper-based exam is being withdrawn from all examination centres across the country, and candidates will take only the computer-based version. The changes also introduce new rules for underage candidates and expanded accommodations for test takers with special educational needs. Below you will find everything you need to know before registering for the exam.

Will Paper-Based IELTS Be Available in Poland in 2026?
No. From January 2026, the paper-based IELTS exam has been completely withdrawn in Poland. All examination centres nationwide conduct the test exclusively in a computer-based format. This decision applies to all test dates and locations without exception.
The format change affects how the three written components of the exam are taken. The Listening, Reading, and Writing sections are completed on a computer at the examination centre. The Speaking test remains unchanged and continues to take place in person as a face-to-face interview with an examiner.
Switching to the computer-based version brings a significant time advantage. IELTS results in the digital format are published much faster than in the paper-based version – sometimes within as little as 24 hours after completing the test.
What Does the Computer-Based IELTS Certificate Look Like?
The IELTS certificate (Test Report Form) for the computer-based exam is issued by default in electronic form. Candidates who require a traditional paper version may request it by email at ielts@lang.com.pl
The examination centre issues the paper certificate free of charge.
Before taking the exam, it is recommended to familiarise yourself with the computer test interface and mechanics. A demo version of IELTS on computer is available on the Lang LTC website: click here to access it and become familiar with the format before the actual exam.
Who Must Have a Chaperone During the IELTS Speaking Test?
Every underage candidate taking the IELTS Speaking test must have a chaperone present in the examination room. From 2026 onwards, this rule is mandatory and there is no option to waive the presence of an accompanying adult. The regulation applies to all candidates under 18 without exception.
The chaperone performs a supervisory role only. They do not participate in the interview and have no influence on the course or result of the IELTS test. Their presence is intended solely to ensure the safety and psychological comfort of the young candidate.
Parents or legal guardians of underage candidates must complete an additional form. The Minor Consent Form must be filled out and submitted to the examination centre on the day of the test.
What Accommodations Are Available for Candidates with Special Needs in IELTS?
The computer-based IELTS exam offers a range of accommodations for candidates with special educational needs, including dyslexia, dysgraphia, and ADHD. The most commonly granted support is extended time for the Reading and Writing sections.
Each accommodation request is assessed individually by the examination centre. If a candidate’s needs go beyond standard arrangements or if there are uncertainties regarding available support, it is recommended to contact the centre by email at ielts@lang.com.pl to discuss the specific situation.
How to Apply for Special Accommodations for IELTS?
Candidates requiring accommodations must submit documentation confirming their special educational needs at least two weeks before the selected exam date. The document, in the form of an assessment or official statement, should be sent to ielts@lang.com.pl Document may be prepared in Polish.
In more complex cases, the examination centre may request documentation in English. Candidates will receive detailed instructions via email if additional steps are required.
Frequently Asked Questions – IELTS 2026 Changes
Can I still take paper-based IELTS in Poland from 2026?
No. From January 2026, IELTS in Poland is available exclusively in the computer-based format. The paper version has been completely withdrawn from all examination centres nationwide.
How quickly will I receive IELTS results in the computer-based version?
Results for computer-delivered IELTS may be published as soon as 24 hours after completing the test, significantly faster than the paper-based version.
Can I receive a paper IELTS certificate after a computer-based exam?
Yes. Although the Test Report Form (TRF) is issued electronically by default, a paper version can be ordered free of charge by emailing ielts@lang.com.pl
What is a chaperone in IELTS and when is one required?

Which is better, CELTA or TEFL?

The awarding body, professional standards & recognition

CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) as a globally recognised teaching qualification is awarded by Cambridge English Language Assessment. It has been around since 1962 and Cambridge gave it its seal of approval in 1988.

The course is based on the Cambridge CELTA Syllabus and can only be conducted by authorised Cambridge CELTA centres.
In other words:

the centres which want to run CELTA courses need to be first approved by Cambridge and the permission is granted only if the centre meets the strict requirements
the centre’s CELTA tutors need to be trained and accredited by Cambridge experts
the tutors need to participate in global standardisation on a regular basis
every single course is supervised externally by a Cambridge Assessor to ensure the same high standards are observed globally.

These are all the conditions that our centre, Lang LTC, has succeeded in meeting since 2014.

What level of qualification is CELTA?

For the UK, CELTA is considered a Level 5 qualification, which makes getting an ELT job there easier, considering the recognition CELTA has globally. This is below the MA degree.

TEFL courses can be designed and conducted by any teacher training institution. Each institution can design its own programme, decide who runs the course and what to include. There is no external awarding body. There is no unified syllabus. There is no standardisation or supervision.

Some TEFL courses meet the Level 5 qualification requirement but it does not mean that they are recognised globally. Oftentimes, they are run by educational institutions which provide paid yet basic training for novice teachers they later hire or offer teaching jobs to.

The price and syllabus

You may wonder how much the CELTA course costs. It will depend on the centre and its geographical location. The expenses on the part of the centre are quite high, especially if the centre decides to run cosier groups with more time for each participant. So the price often depends on the size of the centre and how big the groups are: there is one tutor needed for every Teach Practice group of 6 teacher participants.

That said, when you pay for the CELTA course, the fee usually includes the Cambridge fees, the full programme of well-structured and supervised tuition by accredited tutors, and access to all the online apps used during the course – especially important during online CELTA courses like ours – all the resources and the shipping cost of your certificate.

Check the special Early Bird offer at our centre, Lang LTC HERE. A great bargain! You pay EUR 1052 if you apply early enough. Then, you need to pay the standard fee of EUR 1172, which is still quite competitive.

How many hours does the CELTA course take?

CELTA courses include 120 hours of scheduled sessions, with 8 assessed lessons taught to real students at two different levels.
The course schedule is meticulously planned and approved by Cambridge. The sessions need to include interactive input (in the form of workshops), guided lesson observations including demo lessons run by the course tutors, guided peer observations, guided lesson planning, the above-mentioned Teaching Practice with group and individual feedback, individual tutorials, and four written assignments. Everything revolves around the practice of teaching and allows each teacher to develop from lesson to lesson, working with at least two different tutors. The additional self-study is estimated at a minimum of 80 hours.

In a nutshell, if you complete the CELTA programme, you have experienced enough planning, teaching and training to understand how to teach as a freelancer or in a language school.

TEFL courses are shorter, radically cheaper and do not include a robust Teaching Practice component with feedback on teaching provided by fully-qualified and externally-verified tutors.

That said, employers will expect a teaching qualification which includes the so-called practicum – they want a teacher who has already experienced teaching, feedback on this teaching and customised training.
CELTA meets these demands.

TRF (Test Report Form)
TRF shows a score for each of the four test parts (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking), as well as an overall band score, which is the average of the four component scores, rounded to the nearest whole or half band.
The component scores are weighted equally. If the average of the four components ends in .25, the Overall Band Score is rounded up to the next half band, and if it ends in .75, the Overall Band Score is rounded up to the next whole band.

Listening – There are 40 questions in the IELTS Listening test. Each correct answer has a weight of one point. Scores out of 40 are converted to the IELTS nine-band scale.
Reading – There are 40 questions in the IELTS Reading test. Each correct answer has a weight of one point. Scores out of 40 are converted to the IELTS nine-band scale.

Writing – to award a band score examiners use a number of assessment criteria incl. task achievement (for Task 1), task response (for Task 2), coherence and cohesion, lexical resource and grammatical range and accuracy. The criteria are weighted equally and the score on the task is the average.
Speaking – to award a band score examiners use assessment criteria incl. fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy and pronunciation. The criteria are weighted equally and the Speaking band score is the average.

IELTS test day tips
Here are some quick tips for you to ensure that things will go smoothly for you on the test day.
- Arrive on time – Make sure you know the time and date of your test provided in your confirmation email. Allow enough time to travel to the test centre. Late candidates may not be allowed to take the test.
- Be prepared – Make sure you have the right ID with you. You will not be allowed to take the test if you do not have the right ID. Make sure you have something to eat and drink beforehand. You will not be allowed to take food into the test room and you will only be allowed to take water in a transparent bottle.
- Read the IELTS rules and regulations before the test so you understand them. You’ll find these in the IELTS regulations, terms and conditions.
- Follow the instructions – Listen to the supervisor carefully and follow the test day instructions. When you get your test papers, read the instructions on the cover page first before writing anything. Don’t lose points for careless mistakes because you haven’t read the question properly.
- Switch off your mobile phone and any other electronic devices – You will be asked to place these with other personal belongings outside the test room. Please also be informed that watches are not allowed in the test room. Every test room will have a clock on the wall.
- Stay aware of the time – Stay aware of the time so you can attempt all questions. The Listening, Reading and Writing tests have a number of sections. Allow enough time for each section. Be aware that some questions have suggested time limits for you to follow.
- Be calm and ask for help if needed. Work calmly, focus on the questions, don’t rush your answers and you will do your best. If you start to feel worried, take some deep breaths to help you calm down. If you have any questions the centre staff will help you.
TEST DAY ORGANISATION
- The Listening, Reading and Writing tests last 2 hours 40 minutes and there are no breaks between the parts of the test.
- Speaking test may be offered on the same day as the other sections of the test, or up to a week before or one day after.
- Your photograph will be taken on the first test day of your test.
- At the end of the test stay in your seat until the invigilator gives you permission to leave the room.
- If you think that there have been any issues that may have affected your performance, tell the invigilator.
- If you want to raise an issue or make a complaint, please ask your invigilator for a Test Day Incident Form to complete. This form needs to be submitted within one week of the test date.
