If you’re planning to study in the United States as an international student, you’ll need to prove your English language proficiency. In practice, this is most often done through language tests — and that raises the question: do American universities accept the IELTS test?
The answer is yes — many of them do. Over 3,400 institutions in the U.S. recognize this exam as proof of English proficiency.
However — and this is very important — individual universities set their own language requirements, score thresholds, as well as conditions for test waivers and conditional admissions. That’s why the best approach is to check directly on the website of the university you’re applying to, which language tests are accepted.
Below, you’ll find a summary of typical language requirements and alternatives to the IELTS test that are commonly accepted by universities in the U.S.
Typical IELTS Academic admission requirements at U.S. universities
The following data is for illustrative purposes — actual requirements may vary depending on the department, program, and current university regulations.
Top universities (Ivy League and elite institutions)
For the most prestigious schools in the U.S., high scores are required:
Harvard, MIT, Stanford – typically require an overall band score of 7.0–7.5 at all levels of study.
Yale – requires IELTS score of 7.0 or higher.
Columbia, Northwestern (NWU) – may require a score of 7.5 or higher.
Typical requirements at many universities
At the undergraduate level, IELTS scores of 6.0 to 6.5 are often accepted.
For graduate (postgraduate) programs, minimum requirements typically range from 6.5 to 7.5, depending on the program and university.
Universities with lower requirements
Many less prestigious or regional institutions allow lower score thresholds, for example:
Texas A&M – 6.0.
Arizona State University – 6.0 to 7.0 (depending on program and degree level).
University of Florida – 6.5.
University of Wisconsin–Madison – 6.5 or higher.

Studying in the U.S. – Alternatives to IELTS
If for any reason you don’t want or can’t take the IELTS exam, here are other options:
TOEFL (Internet-based Test, iBT)
Widely accepted in the U.S.
Scoring: up to 120 points. Many universities require between 80 and 100+ points.
Starting January 2026, TOEFL scores will be reported on a 1–6 scale (similar to IELTS, which uses a 1–9 scale).
Duolingo English Test (DET)
Accepted by many U.S. universities as an alternative to IELTS and TOEFL.
Results are typically available within 48 hours.
Scoring: 10–160. Depending on the university, program, and degree level, required scores may range from 115 to 140+
PTE Academic
Less commonly used than TOEFL or IELTS but accepted by some universities.
Cambridge English Certificates
Some universities accept Cambridge English certificates (e.g., C1 Advanced, C2 Proficiency), but this is not the standard. Always confirm this on the university’s admissions page.
Conditional Admission and test waivers
Conditional Admission
This is a solution for applicants who meet academic requirements but haven’t yet reached the required level in a language test. Instead of rejecting the application, the university grants conditional admission — provided the student completes a language course or reaches a specified proficiency level.
For example, Illinois Institute of Technology offers conditional admission without requiring IELTS/TOEFL.
Note that conditional admission doesn’t always mean an immediate start of full academic studies — students often first complete English language courses before beginning their degree program.
Language test waivers
Some universities offer exemptions (waivers) from language test requirements if the applicant meets certain conditions, such as:
Completing high school in an English-speaking country or in a program taught in English,
Attending a university for a certain number of semesters where instruction is in English,
Achieving specific scores in the language sections of the SAT/ACT, which the university recognizes as proof of proficiency.
Practical Tips
Check specific requirements for each university you’re applying to.
IELTS results are valid for 2 years — this is the standard validity period for language tests.
Make sure you know which version of IELTS is accepted — most universities require the IELTS Academic version. The IELTS General Training version is not intended for university admissions.
Confirm whether the university accepts IELTS Online and, if necessary, IELTS One Skill Retake — not all institutions accept these formats.

It is a certificate awarded by Cambridge English Language Assessment to the candidates who complete the CELTA course and meet the required assessment standards. It does sound serious and a bit opaque. Let’s try and explain it in simple terms.
To get the Cambridge CELTA certificate, you need to meet the expected standard in these areas:
Attendance: Complete the course by attending 100% of the scheduled sessions
Teaching Practice: Teach 8 observed and assessed lessons (6 clock hours, in total) and meet the Pass standard for the entire Teaching Practice (TP, for short)
Written Assignments: Submit 4 written assignments and pass at least 3 of them
Professional Conduct: Meet the professional standards required from a teacher
Anti-Plagiarism: Submit the work which is all your own. You can be inspired by other sources but they cannot be copied verbatim and the sources need to be clearly cited
In other words, the two or more tutors you work with during the course will assess your progress based on your coursework, step by step. This is done through ongoing assessment so every bit of your coursework matters.
Your lesson plans and resources as well as your written assignments are part of your CELTA Portfolio, which is reviewed by the Cambridge CELTA Assessor to ensure the CELTA grading standards are the same globally. CELTA Tutors grade your work and the CELTA Assessors ensure they are fair and in line with the Cambridge CELTA standards.
There is no test or exam to take.
There are four possible grades on the certificate:
Fail – when the candidate does not meet the standard
Pass, Pass B or Pass A – when the candidate meets the standard. Pass B could be roughly compared to a merit and Pass A – to a distinction

We are happy to award Pass B and Pass A certificates and – from experience – we can assure you that the grade depends not so much on the candidate’s previous experience but on their work during the course. We strongly recommend online CELTA programmes to candidates who:
want to save on travel, boarding and accommodation
started teaching online with no preparation and are tired of winging it
prefer to follow a part-time programme, with fewer sessions per week spread over a longer period of time, as they need to combine CELTA with other commitments. You may want to check the Saturday-only online CELTA at Lang LTC HERE
want to be more flexible and ready to teach online on demand (as well as face-to-face if needed and desired) e.g. digital nomads, homeschooling parents, frequent travellers, teachers working for private schools running both face-to-face and online courses, people who want to teach online as a side hustle for extra income
have ample experience teaching face-to-face but lose the magic when teaching online… and they cannot work out why
have mobility problems and prefer to work from home
At Lang LTC, we believe the online CELTA programmes may not be suitable for people who:
know they will definitely need to work face-to-face in the future and also
have never faced a group or are seriously intimidated by the very thought of standing or sitting in front of a group of learners
If this rings a bell, you will need more practice in the physical classroom to find your feet and find your voice.
You can start with an online CELTA course and pass it with flying colours but – afterwards – be prepared for a transition period of pro bono face-to-face teaching first, before you can fully enjoy a proper face-to-face teaching job.
As always, there are exceptions to the rule, but teaching face-to-face will always require a dose of confidence which comes with practice. Personality-wise, if you are on the shy, highly introverted and/or insecure side, then a fully online CELTA programme won’t let you develop your real-life confidence to the extent a face-to-face programme would. CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is the most globally recognised teaching qualification awarded by Cambridge English Language Assessment. CELTA from Cambridge is the certificate required by 3 out of 4 English Language Teaching (ELT) jobs in the world.
CELTA prepares you to teach English to adult learners, and you can take a course 100% online or face-to-face. There are also blended programmes – the so-called mixed-mode CELTA courses, where participants teach students online and face-to-face during one course.
Importantly, the Cambridge CELTA certificate is the same for courses conducted face-to-face and online as all the courses follow the same syllabus and meet the same high global standards.
The course is highly practical and includes 6 clock hours of assessed teaching to groups of real students at two different levels of English.
Which CELTA centre to choose?
Cambridge gives their authorization to selected teacher training centres around the world. Some of these centres belong to huge language school and/or exam centre networks (for example, British Council, International House or Teaching House) and their courses around the globe follow a similar format, with more courses and more participants most of the time.
Others, just like our cosy yet well-established centre, Lang LTC – the only Cambridge English Platinum Centre in Poland – met the Cambridge CELTA Centre accreditation requirements despite their limited resources. There are also commercial agencies which charge centres for recruiting candidates for their courses (e.g. StudyCELTA, CELTADELTA are usually the first ones to pop up in Google browsers). You can use them if you feel completely lost and don’t want to make a decision on your own. Just remember: CELTA agents are in no way connected to or recognised by Cambridge, they are not accredited CELTA centres, they do not employ accredited Cambridge CELTA tutors and they do not run their own CELTA courses. They simply work like tourist or real estate agencies for CELTA candidates.
Who can take the CELTA course?
The most beautiful part of the CELTA experience is the adventure of learning from each other. Even though you are assessed individually, the course is designed as a team experience. The entry requirements for CELTA candidates at Lang LTC:
You are at least 20 years old
You have a high school diploma or a higher qualification. It does not need to be connected to teaching English as a foreign language.

WHAT IS THE SCHEDULE?
Our courses this season are held once-a-week, on Saturdays. The spring/summer course has regular breaks for self-study.
They are quite intensive but perfect for people who want a more relaxed pace and need to keep their other commitments during the week. You can keep earning money and enjoying Sundays off while doing the course with us. You can aslo enjoy the summer holiday during the week and meet us on ZOOM on Saturdays.During the course, you meet tutors and students in real-time during live video sessions, human-to-human online. You don’t learn passively on an online platform but actively, in conversations with tutors and your colleagues. You need to attend 100% of the scheduled sessions.
A typical day includes the following live video online meetings on ZOOM:
Teaching Practice aka TP (observed and assessed 45-minute lessons, max. 1 lesson per week, 8 lessons in total, usually every two weeks)
TP Eye Opener Session (group discussions after each observed TP)
Individual Tutorials (once or twice during the course)
Lesson Observations (tutor demos and lessons by experienced CELTA-qualified teachers)
Input Sessions (interactive workshops)
Consolidation Sessions (Q&A slots when you can ask tutors questions )
CELTA Team Time (time to socialise with your team mates and get to know each other better)
You also need to make time for self-study during the week: it is up to you when. In total, you will need min. 80 hours for self-study per course (ca. 8-12 hours per week). This self-study is not scheduled or directly supervised – you will simply need this time to prepare and you decide when you can do it.
Before each of your 8 observed lessons, you will also have a 20-45 minute ZOOM consultation with your tutor about the lesson plan – we call it GLP aka Guided Lesson Planning. This will be scheduled at a time convenient to you and the tutor.

Beata is a freelance teacher and CELTA tutor working with PL 090 Lang LTC Examination Centre in Poland and CELTA centres in Spain, Italy and the Canaries, both as a face-to-face and online Tutor. She holds an MA in English Studies and TEFL, a DELTA diploma, and she is a certified teacher trainer and online tutor. With over 18 years of teaching experience with all age groups, she’s been training teachers, leading a teaching team as a Director of Studies, organising ELT conferences, working as a Cambridge oral examiner and designing teaching materials.
Grzegorz
Grzegorz Południak, Assistant Course Tutor and Online Tutor. With degrees in ELT and Cultural Studies, Greg has been enjoying his role as a teacher of English since 1999, working with students in Poland and the UK, both online and face to face. A certified teacher trainer with a DELTA diploma, Greg started training teachers over a decade ago. He is also a Cambridge and IELTS speaking examiner and an ELT conference presenter. As a great fan of a ‘more learning, less teaching’ approach, he is always on the lookout for new methods of increasing learners’ engagement and delights in learning from his trainees. His CELTA Tutor adventure began in 2017, and he is a tutor who brings into the CELTA classroom active listening, experience, practical approach and tonnes of humour.
Karolina
Karolina Bekker-Łukaszewicz, Assistant Course Tutor and Online Tutor, is a graduate of the Institute of Applied Linguistics at the University of Warsaw, where she studied English and German. She has been teaching English to adults for two decades, online and face-to-face. She is a conference presenter, Celta Tutor and a certified teacher trainer. She believes in a tailor-made approach to teaching and is enthusiastic about adapting authentic materials to maximize her learners’ engagement. Her input and feedback sessions are beautifully designed, interactive, insightful and eye-opening.
WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT THE CENTRE?
We are the only Cambridge Platinum Centre in Poland and we are authorised to run face-to-face and online CELTA courses.
Based in Warsaw, at Lang LTC, we have been a major force on the Polish ELT scene for over 30 years, enjoying fruitful relationships with PASE (Polish Association for Standards in Language Education) since 2002 and Cambridge since 2009. A thriving Cambridge English Examination Centre, since 2013 we have enjoyed the status of a Platinum Centre, the highest accolade accorded by Cambridge. You can take your TKT and DELTA Module 1 exams at our centre.
In Poland, we are the first CELTA centre that established its strong position as a quality CELTA course provider without affiliation to any international chain of schools. We have developed our course format independently while learning from and with the best Cambridge CELTA Tutors and Assessors.
