    What does “Paper-Based (PB) IELTS” mean?  

    The IELTS session on December 6 at Poznan University of Technology will be conducted in a paper-based format. This means the test will be taken in the traditional manner, written on paper.

    The UK’s immigration system is based on a points-based model, which replaced the freedom of movement for EU citizens as of January 1, 2021. To qualify for a Skilled Worker visa, an applicant must earn 70 points. Of these, 10 points are awarded for proving English language skills at the B1 level, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This requirement is part of the mandatory criteria, alongside having a job offer from a licensed sponsor and earning at least the minimum salary threshold set by the UK government.

    What language levels are required?

    The CEFR framework defines specific language proficiency levels expected from applicants:

    • B1 (Intermediate) – understanding the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered at work, school, or leisure. The ability to produce simple connected text on familiar topics.
    • B2 (Upper Intermediate) – ability to interact with native speakers fluently and spontaneously and produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects, including abstract topics.

    For most work visas, including the Skilled Worker visa, a B1 level is sufficient. However, educational institutions may require B2 or even C1 (Advanced) level for academic programs.

    What IELTS scores are required for UKVI visa applications?

    What is IELTS?

    IELTS Test online

    The IELTS online test is a modern form of taking the exam that allows you to take the test in the comfort of your own home or other private space. What are the characteristics of this format of the IELTS test? 

    • The online test has the same format and duration as the land-based version. It covers all four parts: listening, reading, writing and speaking.
    • The exam is administered using Inspera Exam Portal software, which must be installed before the test. Stable internet connectivity and suitable computer equipment are also required.
    • The online test uses advanced security technologies such as multiple identity verification and webcam surveillance by the examiners – equipment that takes this requirement into account is therefore necessary.

    Advantages of IELTS test online

    • convenience and flexibility – you can take the test anywhere with internet access.
    • no stress of travelling to the test centre, which can be important, especially for those living further away from the test centre
    • quick results – available within 6-8 working days

    Disadvantages of IELTS Test Online

    However, this IELTS test format has some disadvantages. 

    First of all, it is often not accepted by universities or expatriate authorities – when you decide to take the IELTS Test Online, make sure that it will be accepted by the target institution. 

    It is also limited by the need for quality equipment and a very stable and verifiable connection, which is still a problem for candidates.

    IELTS test onsite

    The traditional IELTS onsite test takes place at designated exam centres. Participants take the test on paper or computer (depending on their choice) and the oral part takes place directly with an examiner.

    Examiners are present on site, which can increase the sense of security and control over the test in comparison to the online test.

    Advantages of IELTS test onsite

    • accepted by all institutions – the stationary test is widely accepted by universities and immigration authorities.

    What can IELTS do for you?  

    You might need to take an IELTS test, if:

    What does “Paper-Based (PB) IELTS” mean”?  

    IELTS test session on March 9 at Poznań University of Technology will be held in Paper Based version, which means it will be taken in traditional way, on paper.

    A paper copy of your official Test Report Form will be send to you via registered mail after 13 days after the test.

    How much does it cost to take IELTS?  

    The price of the IELTS test is 885 PLN.

    IELTS test format explained

    IELTS tests four language skills and consists of four parts – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

    There are no breaks between Listening, Reading and Writing parts of the test. Those parts last 2 hours and 45 minutes in total. Speaking part lasts 10 – 14 minutes.

    Speaking – IELTS Academic and General (11-14 minutes)

    The Speaking part for both the Academic and General versions is the same. It takes the form of a conversation with the examiner and consists of 3 parts:

    • Part 1 – the examiner asks general questions about your place of residence, family, work, education and hobbies
    • Part 2 – you have one minute to prepare an answer on a specified topic. Your answer should take two minutes. Then, the examiner will ask you one or two questions related to the topic discussed.
    • Part 3 – you will be asked an additional question related to the issue discussed in the previous part, giving you the opportunity to discuss the matter in more detail.

    Important: Speaking test is recorded

    Listening – IELTS Academic and General (30 minutes +10 minutes to transfer responses to the answer sheet)

    Listening for both the Academic and General versions is the same and consists of 4 recordings. The recording will only be played one time.

    • Part 1 – a conversation between two people set in an everyday social context
    • Part 2 – a monologue set in an everyday social context, e.g. a speech about local facilities
    • Part 3 – a conversation between up to four people set in an educational or training context,
      e.g. a university tutor and a student discussing an assignment
    • Part 4 – a monologue on an academic subject, e.g. a university lecture

    Reading- IELTS Academic (60 minutes)

    You have to read 3 long texts taken from from various sources such as books, academic journals, magazines and newspapers. They have been selected for a non-specialist audience but are appropriate for people entering university courses or seeking professional registration. The Reading section consists of 40 questions.

    Reading – IELTS General (60 minutes)

    You have to read 5-6 short excerpts from a variety of sources such as books, journals, newspapers, announcements, advertisements and instructions. These are texts you are likely to encounter on a daily basis in an English-speaking environment. The Reading section consists of 40 questions.

    Writing – IELTS Academic (60 minutes)

    You are presented with a graph, table, chart or diagram and asked to describe, summarise or explain the information in your own words (150 words) and you are asked to write an essay (250 words). Responses to both tasks must be in a formal style.

    Writing – IELTS General (60 minutes)

    You write a letter requesting information or explaining the situation (150 words) and a short essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem (250 words). Responses to both tasks must be in a semi-formal style.

    All candidates taking IELTS test in our Exam Centre are automatically enrolled in our online exam preparation course.

    The paper-based IELTS exam is no longer available in Poland.

    As of the beginning of 2026, the IELTS Paper-Based (PB) test has been fully withdrawn from all test centres in Poland.

    Currently, IELTS can be taken only in the Computer-Delivered IELTS format.

    Important: the computer-delivered exam still takes place in person at an official test centre, not from home. The test format, level of difficulty, and certificate validity remain unchanged.

      The exam fee must be paid within 48 hours of registration, but no later than 3 days before the test date.
      Once exam registration is closed (which happens 3 days before the exam), it is no longer possible to record the payment in the system, so please make sure the payment is completed in advance.

      Things to remember before the test

      Read The IELTS test Regulations

      Check you have a valid photo ID or Passport.
      Check you have a colour scan or photo of your ID or passport. The file size should not be larger than 1.5 MB and MUST be the same document you bring on your exam day.
      Please note that the photo ID you upload, MUST match the photo ID you take on your test day.

      After the registration, you’ll receive an e-mail.

      The test session plan (address, timetable) you’ll receive in your e-mail 3 days before the test day.

      The registration deadline may be extended if there are places left after the official close of registration date.
      Please bear in mind that the session will not be visible in the system after the deadline for registration.

      IELTS scoring in detail

      The IELTS Academic and General Training test results are reported using the same nine-band scale.

      You can score whole band scores (for example 5.0, 6.0, 7.0) or half band scores (e.g. 5.5, 6.5, 7.5).

      TRF shows a score for each of the four test parts (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking), as well as an overall band score, which is the average of the four component scores, rounded to the nearest whole or half band.

      The component scores are weighted equally. If the average of the four components ends in .25, the Overall Band Score is rounded up to the next half band, and if it ends in .75, the Overall Band Score is rounded up to the next whole band.

      Component Band Scores

      Listening – There are 40 questions in the IELTS Listening test. Each correct answer has a weight of one point. Scores out of 40 are converted to the IELTS nine-band scale.

      Reading – There are 40 questions in the IELTS Reading test. Each correct answer has a weight of one point. Scores out of 40 are converted to the IELTS nine-band scale.

      Writing Assessment 

      To determine your Writing band score, examiners look at four core criteria (weighted equally) and take the average. For Task 1, they assess Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. For Task 2, they assess Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy.

      Speaking Assessment 

      To determine your Speaking band score, examiners look at four core criteria (weighted equally) and take the average. These criteria are Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation.

      Official public versions of these assessment criteria have been developed to help test-takers and stakeholders understand the exact level of performance required for each band score.

      Before booking the test

      1. Check if you have a valid photo ID or Passport.
      2. Check if you have a colour scan or photo of your ID or passport. The file size should not be larger than 5 MB and MUST be the same document you bring on your exam day.
      3. Please note that the photo in the submitted ID MUST match the photo that will be taken of the candidate on the day of the test.

      Immediately after registration

      After completing the registration you will receive an email with registration confirmation and your access codes to the online course: IELTS MASTER

      You will also receive your IELTS Reference Number to access the IELTS candidate portal.

      The test fee is 995 PLN. You can pay for your test in one of the following ways:

      IMPORTANT! 
Please pay the required exam fee no later than 2 calendar days after registering for the test, 
where the first day is the day of registration.
Unfortunately, if we do not receive the payment within two calendar days, your application will be cancelled.

      3 days before the test date

      The full test details of your test session (timetable, venue information) will be sent to you approximately 3 days before the test. If you haven’t received such email – please contact our centre: ielts@lang.com.pl

      IMPORTANT: Your Speaking test may be scheduled on the same day as the other sections, or on a different day within a 3 day window before or 1 day after your main test day.

      In the instance of Computer-delivered IELTS Speaking test is held the same day as Listening, Reading and Writing parts.

      Special arrangements

      We can help you if you have visual, hearing, speaking or learning difficulties.

      1. Give us three months’ notice if you are disabled and need modified test papers, e.g.:
      • enlarged print
      • Braille test papers
      • special Listening CD with necessary stops and pauses
      • lip-reading version of the Listening test
      • enlarged print or Speaking task cards in Braille
      • special amplification equipment
      • an amanuensis to write the answers for you
      1. Give us six weeks’ notice if you have dyslexia/dysgraphia and need extra time for the Reading and Writing tests on paper-based IELTS.

      We assure you that your test will be assessed objectively, regardless of any disability or special needs that you may have.
