    Why might your IELTS results be delayed or withheld?

    In certain situations, the release of results may be delayed or temporarily withheld to allow for additional verification. These procedures help protect the reliability of IELTS results, which are trusted by over 12,500 institutions worldwide.

    Common reasons for delayed or withheld results include:

    • Additional verification of the test,
    • Random quality assurance checks,
    • Suspected malpractice or irregularities during the test,
    • Technical issues requiring investigation.

    What to do if your IELTS result has been withheld

    1. Contact your test centre

    Reach out to the centre where you took your IELTS test — they may be able to provide further information.

    2. Review the IELTS Terms and Conditions

    The reasons for delayed or withheld results are outlined in the IELTS Terms and Conditions — in particular, sections 5.10 and 5.11, which state that IELTS partners reserve the right to withhold or cancel results if there are concerns about the result’s validity or suspected violations of test procedures.

    3. Track your result status

    Regularly check your email inbox and candidate portal for updates on the status of your test. Although delays are resolved as quickly as possible, the time frame may vary depending on the type of review being conducted.

    4. Request a review

    If your result was withheld due to an investigation, you may submit a request for a review of the decision.

    5. Retaking the IELTS test

    If you cannot wait for your result or prefer not to risk further delays, you may choose to take the IELTS test again.

    What is the UK’s points-based immigration system?

    The UK’s immigration system is based on a points-based model, which replaced the freedom of movement for EU citizens as of January 1, 2021. To qualify for a Skilled Worker visa, an applicant must earn 70 points. Of these, 10 points are awarded for proving English language skills at the B1 level, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This requirement is part of the mandatory criteria, alongside having a job offer from a licensed sponsor and earning at least the minimum salary threshold set by the UK government.

    What language levels are required?

    The CEFR framework defines specific language proficiency levels expected from applicants:

    • B1 (Intermediate) – understanding the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered at work, school, or leisure. The ability to produce simple connected text on familiar topics.
    • B2 (Upper Intermediate) – ability to interact with native speakers fluently and spontaneously and produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects, including abstract topics.

    For most work visas, including the Skilled Worker visa, a B1 level is sufficient. However, educational institutions may require B2 or even C1 (Advanced) level for academic programs.

    What IELTS scores are required for UKVI visa applications?

    The level of English you need to demonstrate, based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), depends on the type of visa you are applying for. You can find full details on the GOV.UK website.

    Below are the detailed score requirements:

    • For visas requiring CEFR level A1 – you need a Pass in the IELTS for UKVI Life Skills A1 test (Listening and Speaking only).
    • For visas requiring CEFR level A2 – a Pass in the IELTS for UKVI Life Skills A2 test (Listening and Speaking only) is required.
    • For visas requiring CEFR level B1 – you can meet the requirement in two ways: achieve a Pass in the IELTS for UKVI Life Skills B1 test (Listening & Speaking) or score at least 4.0 in each component (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) of the IELTS for UKVI (General Training) test.
    • For visas requiring CEFR level B2 – you must achieve a minimum of 5.5 in each component of the IELTS for UKVI test.
    • For visas requiring CEFR level C1 – you must score at least 7.0 in all four sections of the IELTS for UKVI test.

    How to prepare for the IELTS exam?

    What are the IELTS requirements for UK universities in 2025?

    IELTS score requirements vary depending on the university and the level of study (undergraduate vs postgraduate):

    • Undergraduate studies: Most institutions require an overall IELTS score between 6.0 and 6.5. Some universities may accept a minimum of 5.5, particularly for foundation or preparatory programs.
    • Postgraduate studies (Master’s and PhD): Requirements are generally higher — typically ranging from 6.5 to 7.0, and even more for competitive programs or prestigious institutions.

    Many UK universities specify whether a course requires a standard or higher level of English. For example, some programs such as medicine, law, or psychology may have higher English language requirements even within the same university.

    Moreover, universities often require a minimum overall IELTS Academic score as well as minimum scores in each test component (reading, writing, listening, speaking). For instance, the University of Oxford requires a standard level of IELTS Academic 7.0 overall, with no less than 6.5 in each component.

    Differences between IELTS UKVI and other versions of IELTS

    IELTS UKVI is essentially identical to other versions of IELTS, such as IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training, in terms of content, format and level of difficulty. The main difference is that the results obtained in the IELTS UKVI test are documented in a special Test Report Form, which includes a notation that the test was taken at a UKVI-approved test centre.

    Who is IELTS UKVI designed for?

    IELTS UKVI is aimed at people who plan to:

    • Study at UK universities but do not have (pre-)settled status.
    • Apply for a Tier 4 student visa.
    • Work in the UK or apply for other types of immigration visa.

    For higher education, many universities require a score of 6.0-6.5, which corresponds to level B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

    Process for taking the exam

    1. Registration: you must register for the online exam with an approved test centre. It is important to ensure that the chosen centre offers the IELTS UKVI tests.
    2. Preparation: It is recommended that you use the preparation materials available online and attend preparation courses. You can also take mock tests.
    3. Exam day:
      • The written parts (listening, reading and writing) are held on a single day.
      • The speaking part can be held from 7 days before to 7 days after the written part.
    4. Receipt of results: Results are usually available within 13 days of the exam date.

    Why is it worth passing IELTS UKVI?

    There are several reasons to pass the IELTS UKVI. First and foremost are the visa requirements – for those planning to study or work in the UK, passing this test is often necessary to obtain the appropriate visa.

    IELTS scoring in detail

    The IELTS Academic and General Training test results are reported using the same nine-band scale. 

You can score whole band scores (for example 5.0, 6.0, 7.0) or half band scores (e.g. 5.5, 6.5, 7.5).

    TRF (Test Report Form)

    TRF shows a score for each of the four test parts (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking), as well as an overall band score, which is the average of the four component scores, rounded to the nearest whole or half band.

    The component scores are weighted equally. If the average of the four components ends in .25, the Overall Band Score is rounded up to the next half band, and if it ends in .75, the Overall Band Score is rounded up to the next whole band.

    Component Band Scores

    Listening – There are 40 questions in the IELTS Listening test. Each correct answer has a weight of one point. Scores out of 40 are converted to the IELTS nine-band scale.

    Reading – There are 40 questions in the IELTS Reading test. Each correct answer has a weight of one point. Scores out of 40 are converted to the IELTS nine-band scale.

    Writing – to award a band score examiners use a number of assessment criteria incl. task achievement (for Task 1), task response (for Task 2), coherence and cohesion, lexical resource and grammatical range and accuracy. The criteria are weighted equally and the score on the task is the average.

    Speaking – to award a band score examiners use assessment criteria incl. fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy and pronunciation. The criteria are weighted equally and the Speaking band score is the average.

    Preview your IELTS results

    You can preview your IELTS results by logging in to the IELTS candidate portal.

    The preview of IELTS test result will be available:

    - on the 13th day after the paper-based session, 
    - 1-5 days after the computer-based session,

    unless otherwise specified in the information provided by your test centre. 

    Your results will remain available online for 28 days.

    OFFICIAL TEST REPORT FORM

    A paper copy of your official Test Report Form will be released to you 13 days after
    the paper-based test and an online certificate 1-5 days after computer-based test unless otherwise specified in the information provided by your test centre. TRF (Test Report Form) will be send to you via registered letter. A candidate receives only one copy of the TRF.

    Please inform us by email or during your exam day if you wish to collect your Test Report Form in person or by an authorised person from our office.

    The original copies of your Test Report Form (TRF) will also be sent directly to the institutions you’re applying to. We can send up to five additional copies free of charge. Please include the relevant addresses when you book your test or contact us via email.

    With the complete address we can check whether the institution has access to the IELTS Test Report Form Verification Service that allows it to view your results electronically.

    Release of extra copy of your TRF, in addition to the five copies we provide, is a paid service. The cost is 36 PLN per copy. You will need to provide the institution’s address and fill in the Application for Additional Test Report Form. We will then send the TRF directly to the institution.

    IELTS TEST RESULTS – FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

    How long are my IELTS results valid for?

    Organisations usually accept results if they are up to two years old.

    Can I ask for IELTS test re-marking?

    You can apply for your test to be re-marked. This is a paid service. The cost of Enquiry on Results is 303 PLN. Candidates requesting a re-mark of their papers must submit all relevant documents (an original TRF, a completed Enquiry on Results form and a proof of payment) within 6 weeks of the written test date. The result of the re-mark is available about 4 weeks after the Service Provider has received the documents. If the re-mark/appeal results in an improvement in the candidate’s score, the candidate will receive a full refund of the re-mark/appeal fees.

    Can I resit my IELTS test?

    There are no restrictions on resitting IELTS.

    Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

    The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is an international standard for describing language ability. It describes language ability on a six-point scale, from A1 for beginners, up to C2 for those who have mastered a language. The table below presents the IELTS score range on the CEFR scale.
